[Ben Phelps looks at a crane]

29 Lines

For Solo Cello with effects processing. 2013. 10 minutes.

Written as part of Daniel Gall's Wavering Lines project. The inspiration for this piece was a work of visual art featuring textured lines in the sand. There were 29. The grainy quality of the work got me thinking about white noise and digital distortion, which permeates the work and which I hear the cello as alternately fighting against and embracing. The work has taken on a life quite its own beyond the original visual inspiration, for me at least. It combines a certain mathematical, architectural structure with a sense of somewhat terrifying space and claustrophobia.
